Kick High, Turn Fast: Celebrating 45 Years of Dance

When: Fri., April 13, 8 p.m. and Sat., April 14, 8 p.m. 2018

Dimensions Dance Theater, the oldest continuously operating African American dance company on the West Coast, will celebrate its 45th anniversary this weekend with two world premiere dances and a second line parade. Throughout its decades-long history, the dance company has acted as a leader in bringing African and African-derived dances into the United States. This two-day event is a continuation of the company’s everyday work of honoring and reflecting the lives and historical experiences of African Americans. In a program as forward-thinking as the company itself, longtime company member Latanya d. Tigner will premiere a 25-minute work about homelessness and Andrea Vonny Lee will perform a newly commissioned work paying homage to the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman, “Ain’t No Turning Back.” The evening closes in full-on celebration with the entire company taking the stage, accompanied by live music from a West African dundunba battery and Twilight, the band. Post-performance events are planned for both evenings.
