Khodorkovsky

Rated NR 111 minutes 2011

Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once Russia’s richest man, was a classic technocratic “oligarch” who made millions in the oil business in the Wild West gangster-businessman days in the 1990s when that country was transitioning from communism to capitalism. Now he’s locked up in a Siberian prison. This ambitious documentary by German filmmaker Cyril Tuschi shows how that happened. But inevitably with such a slippery subject, halfway through it turns into a story about the doc itself and its maker, digging too deeply for comfort into the real source of power in Russia. It’s still in the Kremlin. And Tuschi’s investigative piece is all but banned in Russia. It may be fuzzy around its edges, but inside it’s hard as steel. Written and directed by Tuschi. (111 min.)
