Kev Choice Ensemble

When: Sat., Aug. 29, 9 p.m. 2009

Known for her romance-themed mix CDs and chic material-girl fashion sense, Oakland-raised emcee Shania D returns from a long sojourn in Southern California to perform this Friday, March 14 at the Shattuck Down Low (2284 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley). She'll be accompanied by Hayward rapper Prince Ali and a three-piece jam band called the Destruments who often combine programmed drum beats with Moog synthesizers in an "acid jazz" style borrowed from Roy Ayers. Capping off the bill is Oakland jazz pianist-turned-emcee Kev Choice, who will school an audience on the oft-overlooked works of Bud Powell and Andrew Hill, when he's not turning a Sam Cooke hook into an Obama campaign anthem. 9 p.m., $10.
