New Orleans artist kei slaughter plays the keyboard, flute, and a whole bunch of other instruments, all of which make an appearance in their music. Slaughter’s latest record, Dark Fire, is a blend of folk, soul, and American roots music, and it’s the perfect backdrop for some intense and deeply personal storytelling. On the title track, Slaughter tells their grandfather’s painful life story and draws parallels to Slaughter’s own challenges — an intergenerational struggle played out in song. In addition to writing and performing, Slaughter uses music as a tool for healing by working with youth in the LGBTQIA community and within the juvenile justice system.
