As a teenager enrolled at Oakland School for the Arts, Kehlani Parrish and her schoolmates formed the group PopLyfe. Featuring two children of D’wayne Wiggins, a member of Tony! Toni! Toné! (he also produced the group’s work), PopLyfe earned fourth place on the television show America’s Got Talent in 2011. Since then, Kehlani’s solo career has entailed a series of finely produced music videos — including a widely-watched reworking of Ty Dolla $ign’s “Or Nah” in collaboration with the local rapper Tia Nomore — that evince a keen handle on the vocal sensibilities and style of 1990s R&B. Kehlani, who headlines at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) on Tuesday, appears poised to parlay her childhood immersion in entertainment into a viable career.
