KCSM's Close the Gap Benefit Concert

When: Tue., June 30, 8 & 10 p.m. 2009

Jazz radio stations have no shortage of devotees, but they apparently suffer from a perennial paucity of resources. Luckily, when KCSM came up short after its pledge drive this spring, jazz musicians jumped to the rescue. Tuesday's "Close the Gap" benefit concert at Oakland Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero) features three remarkable pianists, all born or based in the Bay Area. Veterans Denny Zeitlin and Jon Jang are both institutions in their own right -- Zeitlin is particularly noteworthy because he divides his time between professional jazz piano and his equally illustrious career in psychiatry. (Besides boasting a vast discography, he holds a professorship in the clinical psychiatry department at University of San Francisco). The youngster is twenty-four-year-old Menlo Park native Taylor Eigsti, who has already garnered two Grammy nominations in his short career. Tues., June 30, 8 & 10 p.m. $50
