Soul, Funk, R&B, & Hip-Hop

When: Fri., July 3, 10 p.m. 2009

Japanese-American rapper Kaz-Well sings the bad-relationship blues on his debut album Fish Outta Water, a sweet, confessional album that fits well in the tradition of backpacker hip-hop. Driven heavily by 1980s pop samples, the album has a breezy, synthetic sound, but for one cameo by local chanteuse Odessa Chen. Kaz-Well celebrates his album release on Friday, July 3, at San Francisco's Horizon club (498 Broadway St.), with special guest performances by Michelle Martinez, Keelay & Zaire, HopieSpitshard, and DaEnvangelist, plus his whole coterie of DJs. 10 p.m., free food provided by Hard Knox Cafe.
