Experimental & Avant-Garde

Kayo Dot with Wild Hunt

When: Tue., Aug. 21, 6 p.m. 2012

The Bay Area metal scene may not be producing any mega-big bands as of late, but there are a ton of underground acts making waves, and they're doing so largely by incorporating all kinds of different sounds and influences into the heavy music template. Oakland's Wild Hunt is one of them -- a black-metal-influenced prog-metal band that's been around since 2004, but just released its debut full-length, Before the Plane of Angles, on New York-based Kemado Records this year. Considering that three of four members also play in the thrash-prog-experimental metal band Dimesland, and one also dabbles in electronic funk-pop with The Samps, it's easier to understand the band's nontraditional (melodically and structurally) sound -- and also why it seems to gel so naturally. It's a compelling, at times triumphant, debut, one that reflects a clearly thought-out (and well-executed) vision. At Oakland Metro (630 3rd St., Oakland) on Tuesday, Aug. 21, with Kayo Dot, Hollow Mirrors, Marching Mind, and Abstracter. 6 p.m. $8. OaklandMetro.org
