The Last Town Chorus is the nom de musique of singer-songwriter and lap-steel guitarist Megan Hickey. Her lap steel has a unique ghostly sound, prone to trebly overtones and sinister, booming bass notes. Hickey taught herself to play the instrument and uses it to color her dark lyrical observations, alternating between quiet, dirge-like passages and volleys of tooth-grinding noise. Her vocals have that just-about- to-break-into-tears quality of the great female country singers, coupled with a street-wise rock wisdom that makes her insights all the more cutting. She's an intense performer fronting a band that impresses with Its low-key virtuosity. The Last Town Chorus opens for Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards on Tuesday, May 20 at the Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $18.
