After a three-year hiatus, Kamikazee — a Green Day or My Chemical Romance equivalent in the Philippines — returns for its Tagpuan tour around the islands and in the United States. Kamikazee, a rock ’n’ roll band that consists of Jay Contreras, Jomal Linao, Led Tuyay, Puto Astete, and Bords Burdeos, first got together after college. In 2002, the group released Kamikazee, a compilation of eight original tracks and two covers, Ariel Rivera’s “Sana Kahit Minsan” and Britney Spears’ hit “Lucky.” The grungy band transforms Spears’ soft-spoken lullaby into a hard-edged record by speeding up the tempo about 40 beats per minute and delivering Early morning, she wakes up / Knock, knock, knock on the door in a much raspier punk tone. In 2007, “Narda,” a single from its second album, Maharot, received three awards for best performance, best rock recording, and song of the year at the Awit Awards, an annual music award ceremony hosted by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry.
