Kaki King

When: Tue., March 25, 8 p.m. 2008

Kaki King's amazing guitar technique is the stuff of legend. In arrangements that move from folk, to jazz, to funk, she blends flurries of finger-picked notes with fret tapping to create harmonic overtones, uses slap bass techniques to add pounding rhythmic accents, and thumps the body of the guitar, making it as much a percussion instrument as a melodic one. On her latest album, Dreaming of Revenge, she also proves to be an impressive singer-songwriter delivering oblique observations on life and love with an understated vocal approach that's somewhere between a purr and a growl. Kaki King plays Friday, March 26 at the Great American Music Hall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $16.
