Writer-director Gregg Araki is the picture of consistency. In company with John Waters, David Lynch, and Pedro Almodóvar, he’s still remaking the same movies he did in the late Eighties. In Araki’s case, it’s the familiar story of the sexually curious but shy university student named Smith (Thomas Dekker) who obligingly gets it on with a frisky coed (Juno Temple) but secretly craves his surfer roommate (Chris Zylka), among other guys. It’s actually kind of fun, especially when we stir in Smith’s horny mom (Kelly Lynch). But if you’re looking for anything deeper than a pan-sexual Southern California comic romp you’re in the wrong dorm room. Screenplay by Araki (Totally F***ed Up, Nowhere). Costarring Haley Bennett as Smith’s straight best friend. (86 min.)
