When: Nov. 5-27 2010

Mercury 20 hosts three solo shows this month: Dave Meeker'sBeacons, Jamie Morgan's Night & Day, and Andrew Werby'sJuxtamorphs. Meeker's immaculately crafted light sculptures, made from cardboard, tape, plastic, and color-filtered LEDs, are homages to art luminaries like Dan Flavin, Sol Lewitt and James Turrell. Don't forget other incandescent culture heroes like Andy, Christo, Frank, Janis, Maya, Patti, Roy, Stanley, and the bards of Krypton; test yourself on Pop/Minimalist culture. Morgan's oils of Oakland street scenes depict recognizable locations (look around the Murmur neighborhood) that he has photographed and translated into oil, conveying either the beauty of the sunlit quotidian (e.g., freeway overpasses, parking lots) or nocturnal mystery (cars on darkened streets). Werby's sculptures in sculpted paint and exotic woods, some computer-designed, transform natural shapes and textures into humorously unsettling hybrids ("Orthofox," "Nautivert") -- Art Nouveau/surrealist artifacts/effigies perfect for your grotto or cocoon. Shows run through November 27 at Mercury 20 Gallery (475 25th St., Oakland). 510-701-4620 or
