Justin Townes Earle was already fighting an uphill battle the day he was born. As the son of legendary Americana singer-songwriter Steve Earle, and named after Earle’s idol, Townes Van Zandt, the young singer-songwriter went into music with something to prove. He’s grown into quite an excellent alternative county singer, though his easy-going, breezy, folk-country style doesn’t quite suggest the urgency of a kid out to show the world that he is worthy of his namesake. But maybe that’s precisely what makes him such a remarkable musician, one who is wise beyond his years. The young troubadour chose subtlety over flashy presentation and heart-on-the-sleeve emotionality. Even his mix of musical influences, which draws from blues, folk, country, and American roots music, suggests advanced songwriting chops.
