The Steady Running of the Hour is an auspicious title for Justin Go’s debut novel: This is a book that’s obsessed with time, imbued with rushed anxiety, permeated with the tick-tick-ticking of a clock or a bomb somewhere far away, unseen but deeply felt. As it opens, the protagonist, Tristan Evans, has but a few weeks to prove he’s the rightful heir to a fortune he never knew existed, from a distant relative who died too young and who himself was always, it seems, running out of time. It’s something between a coming-of-age tale, a straight-up thriller, and a historical tragedy — and it’s quite good.
