For those of us who are exhausted simply by imagining the congested roads, nightmarish camping, and rigidly tiered VIP experiences that border on class warfare, there’s much to loathe about Coachella. One of the best parts, however, is that international acts lured to California for the behemoth music festival often make the most of their airfare by picking up a few Bay Area tour dates. And so we find ourselves, with much reluctance, giving thanks to Coachella for booking London soul music collective Jungle. Founded in 2013 by Tom McFarland and Josh Lloyd-Watson, Jungle seamlessly blends soul, R&B, and hip-hop into jams polished to a blinding sheen; it’s like listening to one continuous, three minute-long hook. On singles “Busy Earnin’” and “Time,” the soaring vocals are tightly layered, the drums are popping, the synths are sparkling, and the guitars lay in just the right amount of funk. Jungle is known for its fierce performances, so take advantage of the opportunity to see the band without some trust-fund kid in a Native American headdress blocking your view.
