Jubu & Legally Blynd

When: Tue., March 31, 8 & 10 p.m. 2009

Led by Oakland songwriter Jubu Smith, rock band Legally Blynd is a local cult favorite that's just starting to get its due. Smith learned to play guitar by ear and had incredible chops by the time he got to BerkeleyHigh School in the '80s -- popular R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné!, hired him straight out of high school. After years of composing, arranging, and side-manning for other people (Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Alicia Keys, and Frankie Beverly & Maze among them), Smith became a balladeer in his own right. He formed Legally Blynd in order to make music with his brother, bassist Eric "Pikfunk" Smith, who also had a prolific career leading bands for Rihanna and Fantasia. Legally Blynd performs with a varying number of members, but the band always sounds phenomenal.  Jubu & Legally Blyndperform Tuesday, Mar. 31 at Yoshi's(510 Embarcadero West, Oakland). 8 & 10 p.m., $16.
