Juana Molina

When: Wed., Aug. 13, 8 p.m. 2008

In her native Argentina, Juana Molina is a pop-culture icon known for her satirical portrayals of beautiful, self-important, considerably-less-than-intelligent models and actresses on her sketch comedy television show, Juana y sushermanas. This summer she's been touring with Feist in the US while making stops to headline her own shows, as she'll do at Yoshi's in San Francisco (1330 Fillmore St.) on Wednesday, August 13. Her music is an organic mixture of folk guitar, electronica, and ambient beats, at times sounding like Björk on heavy tranquilizers sans saccharine vocals. Lyrically, Molina is at her best when she focuses her attention on the natural world, like DevendraBanhart or even CateanoVeloso, with haiku-like precision. Her voice rarely rises above a whisper and her svelte Argentinean accent is sure to leave the audience nostalgic for Buenos Aires. 8 p.m., $18. SF.Yoshis.com
