JP, Chrissie & The Fairground Boys

When: Sat., Oct. 23, 9 p.m. 2010

Even on the cusp of 60, Chrissie Hynde still affects a youthful swagger and sly sexuality that doesn't come off as forced. And while the status of her main group The Pretenders is perpetually in the air, Hynde lucked into hooking up with Welsh singer-songwriter J.P. Jones and his Fairground Boys. While the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and her younger collaborator are being coy about the nature of their relationship, they've focused on the music by cutting Fidelity!, a stellar collection of loose-limbed, rock and folk-flavored pop that alludes to a love affair despite the Akron native insisting that's not the case. Whether it's true or not, this is the best Hynde has sounded in quite some time thanks to the spontaneity of these performances and her spot-on chemistry with Jones. The duo wrap its vocals around each other in the boozy opening stroll "Perfect Lover" and carry this hand-in-glove musical chemistry through numerous other excellent moments including the Ryan Adams-flavored "If You Let Me" and "Fairground Luck" with its aura of desperate yearning. You can decide for yourself what kind of friends Hynde and Jones really are when they are joined by opening act Amy Correia at Bimbo's 365 Club (1025 Columbus Ave., San Francisco) on Saturday, October 23. 9 p.m. $28-$33.
