Joyful Noise

Rated NR 2012

Everyone onscreen (including Dolly Parton, Queen Latifah, and the lesser-known supporting players) seems to be having a good time in this cheesy musical comedy, even though the material is strictly by-the-numbers. A small-town gospel choir prepares for a national competition, and most of the singers have sitcom-ready conflicts that get neatly resolved by the end. The sentiments are agreeable enough: The choir is notably multiracial, the church's rich benefactress (Parton) enjoys familial relationships with the working-class congregants, and all the characters speak in funny southern homilies. But it's hard to enjoy the movie's charms when writer-director Todd Graff (Camp, Bandslam) keeps trying to shove them down your throat. (118 min.)
