Journey to the Center of the Earth

Rated PG 92 minutes 2008

Journey to the Center of the Earth succeeds for two reasons: first, it creatively transports the action of Jules Verne’s sci-fi classic to the modern day by turning the novel into a sort of treasure map; and second, its 3-D special effects make otherwise bland CGI visually acceptable. The overall effect is a rollicking family adventure into the primitive interior of our planet where carnivorous plants, flying piranha, and Tyrannosaurus Rex are all out to eat our three protagonists while they try to escape with their lives. As geophysicist Trevor Anderson, Brendan Fraser proves yet again that an actor can be utterly watchable while simultaneously being completely unbearable (92 min.).
