Experimental & Avant-Garde

John Gruntfest's Ritual Resurrection Band

When: Tue., Dec. 16, 9 p.m. 2008

One of the coolest new additions to the calendar at Uptown Nightclub (1928 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) is experimental jazz on Tuesday nights, featuring artists you'd typically hear at small listening spaces or storefront galleries, but seldom at a commercial nightclub. Next Tuesday, Dec. 16's billing features alto saxophonist John Gruntfest, a mysterious figure who has haunted the Bay Area free-jazz scene for decades. Despite having a paucity of recorded material, he's lionized by music heads. Gruntfest plays in rather unusual setups (i.e., sax and drum trio featuring Megan Bierman on tenor and Jack Duval on sticks), in which the musicians loosely coalesce around a melodic idea or groove, and then take it in many different directions. Gruntfest'sRitual Resurrection Band plays with SL Morse and the Weasel Walter Quintet. 9 p.m., free. UptownNightClub.com
