John Carter 3D

Rated PG-13 132 minutes 2012

The title character, a gold-hunting desperado in the Old West (Taylor Kitsch), gets himself magically transported to the planet Barsoom (aka Mars), where he contends with warring tribes, a faithful dog-reptile, and a sexy warrior-princess named Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). With the emphasis on the princess. The effect is strangely pleasing. That’s partly because of the creaky “futuristic” contraptions the Martians use — the story originated as part of a series of fantasy novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, circa 1912-1948 — but mostly because of director Andrew Stanton’s skill at making the most of far-fetched sci-fi entertainments, e.g., WALL-E and Finding Nemo. Try not to focus on the unfortunate resemblance of the skinny, green, tusk-faced Tharks to one Jar Jar Binks. Stanton, Mark Andrews, and Michael Chabon wrote the screenplay, adapted from Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars. (132 min.)
