Joanna Gruesome, Tony Molina and Hard Left

When: Wed., Aug. 20, 7 p.m. 2014

The legendary Berkeley-based imprint Slumberland Records celebrates 25 years of operation in 2014, and it’s easy to think of 1-2-3-4 Go! Records (420 40th St #5, Oakland) upcoming East Bay bill with Joanna Gruesome, Tony Molina, and Hard Left as the label’s birthday party. Welsh pop outfit Joanna Gruesome released its alternately shimmering and shattering full-length LP, Weird Sister, on the label in 2013. Also last year, Slumberland reissued Tony Molina’s concise and potent solo debut, Dissed and Dismissed, promising to deliver the artist’s follow-up this year, too. As for Slumberland’s owner and sole operator, Michael Schulman fronts Hard Left, a new group whose releases so far capture a punchy rock outfit that pulls from both the lumbering swagger and left-wing politics of English Oi! music. For independent labels of such vintage, Slumberland’s maintenance of a relevant current roster, rather than leaning on former glories, is an exceptional and impressive feat.
