Jimmy Carter Man from Plains

Rated PG 120 minutes 2007

The former president is more than just a sincerely religious Georgia peanut farmer who donates his time to build homes, says filmmaker Jonathan Demme. He remains a committed policy wonk and political author (21 books) with strong ideas about non-violent conflict resolution. This thoroughly disarming documentary profiles the octogenarian Carter on a publicity tour for his book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, breezing through broadcast interviews with the folksiness that drives detractors mad and convinces people like writer-director-producer Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) that if anyone can bring peace to the Middle East, Carter can. An ingratiating portrait of a complex man (125 min., 2007).
