This thoroughly disarming documentary profiles the octogenarian Carter on a publicity tour for his book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, breezing through broadcast interviews with the folksiness that drives detractors mad and convinces people like writer-director-producer Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) that if anyone can bring peace to the Middle East, Carter can. An ingratiating portrait of a complex man (125 min., 2007).
