When: Wednesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. and Sundays, 3 p.m. Continues through March 2 2008
The Willows opens its 2008 season with that guiltiest of pleasures, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's 1971 pseudo-rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. The musical shows Jesus spending his last days in a snit, being crabby with his groovy apostles and lamenting his fate a lot. A spaced-out Mary adores him, people plot to kill him, and Judas runs around in moral anguish over what a sellout Jesus is. It may not exactly be the greatest story ever told, but Webber's vision of Jesus as a hippie sensation is always entertaining as a period piece. Here it's directed by Marilyn Langbehn with Erwin Urbi as the big JC, Tareek Lee Holmes as Judas, and Meghan Doyle as Mary Magdalene. January 28 through March 2 at the Willows Theatre (1975 Diamond Blvd., Concord).WillowsTheatre.org or 925-798-1300.
