There’s blood in my mouth/‘Cause I’ve been biting my tongue all week. So sang Jenny Lewis on the “Portions for Foxes,” one of many excellent tracks on 2004’s More Adventurous by her old band Rilo Kiley. She had dozens of lines like that: unambiguous, cutting takes on pain and suffering that were at once less ham-fisted and more resonant than those dispensed by her contemporaries associated with Saddle Creek Records. Since then, Lewis’ career highlights include the 2008 solo outing Acid Tongue, whose classicist opening ballad “Black Sand” reaffirmed Lewis’ prowess as a vocalist. Her most recent full-length, 2014’s The Voyager — which she’s supporting with a performance at the Fox Theater (1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland) on Thursday — features the choice single, “Just One of the Guys.” She’s still frank, grappling with her inner-cop and childlessness at middle age, but by this point she doesn’t have any contemporaries worthy of comparison.
