All Ages, Jazz, Lounge, & Cabaret

Jenna Mammina & André Bush

When: Thu., June 12, 8 p.m. 2008

Jenna Mammina's unique voice combines elements of Rickie Lee Jones' relaxed drawl, Billie Holliday's breathy phrasing, and Abby Lincoln's subtle drama. She can purr her way through a jazz standard, a country song, or a new pop tune, transforming the material into simmering, soulful vignettes brimming with understated emotion. Her yearly appearances at the New Orleans Heritage and Jazz Festival are much-anticipated events and her original tunes cast an intimate spell all their own, comparing favorably to the standards she loves. At her June 12 appearance at the Freight & Salvage (1111 Addison St., Berkeley), Mammina will be joined by her longtime accompanist and musical director André Bush, a guitarist/composer able to combine subtle improvisations with complex, multi-layered grooves that combine the best elements of progressive jazz and funky rock 'n' roll. 8 p.m., $18.50, $19.50.
