Soul, Funk, R&B, & Hip-Hop

When: Sat., Aug. 6, 9 p.m. 2011

Singer Briana Cartwright (aka Jack Davey) and producer Brook D'Leau are innovators, certainly, but they're also pastiche artists. Or so one would think from listening to the bizarre, atonal, many-layered, hodge-podgey music of this Los Angeles duo, known by its typographically adventurous stage name, J*Davey. The group supposedly incorporates nine genres, exceeding even the most fusion-happy of jam bands. That makes for a sound that's sometimes more interesting than it is gratifying, since the melodies tend to be jagged and asymmetrical. Still, there's a lot of pleasure on the surface, particularly Cartwright's sultry voice. This week, J*Davey performs alongside East Bay vocalist Karyn Paige, whose similarly patchwork aesthetic, stylish apparel, and powerful alto make her an apt opener. She'll perform a mix of new wave and soul music with her band, The Scoundrels. Local rapper-producer Trackademicks hosts. At The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) on Saturday, Aug. 6. 9 p.m., $15, $20.
