Japandroids and Cloud Nothings

When: Tue., April 16, 9 p.m. and Wed., April 17, 9 p.m. 2013

I'll confess -- when Canadian rock duo Japandroids released its acclaimed 2012 album, Celebration Rock, I was put off by how happy it sounded. Mired in a morose music phase, I wasn't feeling the whoops and hollers, sweepingly ecstatic guitar solos, vertiginous percussion, and doses of un-ironic fist-pump lyrics like Oh yeah! All right! (the album's seven-word tagline would probably be "I'm so fucking stoked to be alive"). If you open yourself to Japandroids' sheer, uncomplicated, ear drum-popping joyfulness -- magnified infinitely during its live shows -- it'll fast take root. Japandroids will share a two-night bill at The New Parish (579 18th St., Oakland) with Cloud Nothings, which showed its darker, more abrasive punk side on last year's Attack on Memory. Japandroids will headline on Tuesday, Apr. 16, and Cloud Nothings will headline on Wednesday, Apr. 17. 9 p.m., $22, $25.
