Janiva Magness

When: Wed., Oct. 22, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008

Soulful blues singer JanivaMagness has a backstory made for the movies: her parents committed suicide before she was sixteen., she was shuttled from foster home to foster home, got strung out on drugs, and gave birth to a daughter she gave up for adoption. After seeing Otis Rush live, she turned her life around and while working as an intern at a recording studio, began singing background vocals on recordings. Bob Tate, Sam Cooke's musical director, helped her put her first band together and within a year JanivaMagness and the Mojomatics was voted best blues band by the Phoenix New Times. Since then she's poured her heart and soul into every note she sings. Her latest album, What Love Can Do, is one of her best, and her emotionally wrenching live gigs are becoming the stuff of legend. JanivaMagness performs Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland). 9:30 p.m., $10. Yoshis.com
