Janis: Little Girl Blue

Rated NR 103 minutes 2015

Amy J. Berg’s loving documentary tribute to the late rock/blues chanteuse Janis Joplin benefits from some splendid concert footage – ‘Women Is Losers,” “Cry Baby,” “Summertime,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” etc. – and choice shots of the gal from Port Arthur, Texas reaching her peak in hippie San Francisco just before burning out at the now-legendary age of 27. The unusually knowledgeable talking heads include Dick Cavett and doc-maker D.A. Pennebaker. Surprisingly, it’s difficult if not impossible to spy a single bottle of Southern Comfort in any of the backstage party footage. A welcome primer on one of the era’s most misunderstood pop icons (105 min.).
