Jane Eyre

Rated PG-13 118 minutes 2011

Cary Joji Fukunaga maintains the property value of the much-filmed English-lit franchise. His Jane is dark, gothic, and Victorian, the better to frame the somewhat subdued mannerisms of our heroine (nicely played by Mia Wasikowska) and her elusive beloved, Rochester (Michael Fassbender), tussling in Thornfield Hall, the house of secrets. Director Fukunaga (Sin Nombre) and screenplay adapter Moira Buffini (Tamara Drewe) imagine Jane Eyre as a willful, intelligent, discreetly calculating young woman who is aware that she must play the cards that she’s been dealt very carefully, and cry about her misfortune later. And Wasikowska provides. The large cast of supporting players adds to the mood: Sally Hawkins, Judi Dench, Jamie Bell, Freya Parks, Simon McBurney, Imogen Poots, and Valentina Cervi. (115 min.)
