Jamie XX

When: Sun., Oct. 14, 9 p.m. 2012

Gloom pop trio The xx headline Treasure Island Sunday night and immediately after its set, drummer Jamie Smith (aka Jamie xx) will rush to Public Works (161 Erie St., San Francisco), where he'll headline the after-party. In his early 20s, Jamie xx already has a Mercury Prize to his band's credit and serious credibility as a DJ. He's responsible for Thexx's dark, minimal percussion, a continuation of England's 1980s new wave sound. As DJ Jamie xx, he ups the tempo and thickens the bass lines. His first single, "Far Nearer/Beat For," demonstrated his ability to produce club tracks. But it was his remix of "NY Is Killing Me" by the late musician and poet Gil Scott-Heron that established him as more than another post-dubstep DJ. Jamie xx went on to remix Scott-Heron's entire last album, I'm New Here. Expect more obscure references to American soul and avant-garde at his Public Works set, where he'll be joined by Manchester's dark and emotive Holy Other, who makes his San Francisco debut, plus John Talabot and IceeHot's resident DJs on Sunday, Oct. 14. 9 p.m., $25.
