The indefatigable James Murphy is best known as the leader of the pioneering, now-defunct electronic dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem. Although LCD Soundsystem played its last show more than two years ago, Murphy has been active as a DJ and producer (he oversaw Arcade Fire’s forthcoming album and he’s the founder of DFA Records, whose current roster includes YACHT and Holy Ghost!). Murphy’s DJ sets are genre-bending and deeply satisfying in the same way LCD Soundsystem’s was; his funky disco and pop selections span decades, and always get the crowd moving. When I last saw him, he played “This Must Be the Place” by Talking Heads as his final song of the night without altering it in any way — it was perfection. Catch him at Public Works (161 Erie St., San Francisco) with local DJs Conor, Solar, and J Boogie.
