In his mega-bestselling 1996 memoir, The Color of Water, James McBride probed his past as one of the twelve children of an African-American father and a Jewish-immigrant mother. Spike Lee is directing the film version of McBride's 2003 novelMiracle at St. Anna, now in production in Italy. The author's new novel Song Yet Sung chronicles the travails of a clairvoyant runaway slave who -- while striving to escape a skilled slave-catcher -- can "see" subsequent phases of African-American history.
