After co-authoring with his wife Queerly Beloved: A Love Story Across Genders, the award-winning memoir about the couple’s transition from lesbian partners to husband and wife, Jacob Anderson-Minshall returns with a new novel, Swimming Upstream. Again, he writes about gender fluidity, but also political topics including war and environmentally conscious living, as well as family and tradition. The story follows Coyote “Ki” Douglas, a transgender man, who adopts Flint Douglas, an intersex teenager. His compassion gets Flint off the streets, but quickly, Ki’s past begins to unravel, causing the ground to shift beneath Flint’s very feet. A private investigator shows up on their doorstep one day, asking Ki to donate a kidney to save his estranged daughter’s life. Meet Anderson-Minshall at Laurel Book Store, where he will read from Swimming Upstream, sign books, and answer your burning questions.
