Jack Goes Boating

Rated R 90 minutes 2010

Philip Seymour Hoffman inaugurates his directorial career with this solid, if not exactly groundbreaking, adaptation of Robert Glaudini’s old-fashioned-looking Off-Broadway play about a quartet of New York City losers taking out their frustrations on each other. Hoffman casts himself as Jack, a lonely limo driver fixed up with Connie (Amy Ryan), a ditto mortuary assistant, at a disastrous dinner party. Their bickering married friends Clyde (John Ortiz) and Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega) are more fun to watch. Hoffman and Ortiz formerly co-directed the LAByrinth Theater Company, where they produced Glaudini’s drama, and if it’s not about to set the world on fire, it at least establishes Hoffman as a full-fledged actors’ director.(89 min.)
