The ideal village-picture fable, with a gloriously simple plot: A young Kaqchikel woman (played by non-actor María Mercedes Coroy), living and working with her parents on a Guatemalan coffee plantation, gets engaged to a village man, but trouble develops before they can wed. Everything revolves around the monolithic face of first-time player Coroy as María, stoic and dignified as a native idol, absorbing every blow of bad luck. Written and directed by Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante, a European film-school grad, with ethnography and innate mythological wonders to spare (93 min.).
