The Berkeley/Oakland AileyCamp at Cal Performances is not a form of conservatory training for prima ballerinas, even if the name "Alvin Ailey" has long been a gold standard of modern dance. Rather, AileyCamp provides a space for "underserved" sixth, seventh, and eighth graders (selected through a rather involved application process) to explore a variety of arts disciplines, including creative writing, craft-making, costume design, choreography, and several dance traditions ranging from ballet to Horton Technique. AileyCamp's faculty includes teachers from BerkeleyHigh School, MillsCollege, BrownUniversity, and several acclaimed dance programs, and the campers learn self-discipline and critical thinking skills under their tutelage. And best of all, each of the 85 campers gets a full scholarship and tuition. AileyCamp culminates Thursday, July 31, at Zellerbach Hall (Bancroft Way at Telegraph Ave., UC Berkeley) with a multidisciplinary dance performance "...ism". 7 p.m., free. 510-642-9988
