Iron Shoes

When: March 15-April 15 2018

Three women characters drawn from Eastern European fairy tales form a union in Iron Shoes, a new folk opera presented by Shotgun Players in collaboration with all-women vocal ensemble Kitka. Composer/music director Janet Kutulas, playwright/librettist Michelle Carter, and director/choreographer Erika Chong Shuch are the powerhouses behind the 15-member cast and a contemporary tale that moves from the realm of fantasy and magic to address timeless issues of empowerment, fate, empathy, and control. Two young women cursed to roam the earth in iron shoes, and a third woman who is armless and unable to save her baby after the infant falls into a well, join forces to defy a narrator’s restrictive storytelling and take command. Interweaving movement, language, and song based on Serbian and Bulgarian dance and vocal traditions, the opera combines Kitka’s signature levity and lyricism with hard-driving drama.
