Ip Man 2

Rated R 108 minutes 2010

Second chapter of the Donnie Yen/Raymond Wong/Wilson Yip biopic series devoted to legendary martial arts master Ip Man is lusty, provocative, and visually gorgeous, with the added bonus of Hong Kong action vet Sammo Hung as the bad guy rival to the dignified Master Ip’s (Yen) Wing Chun discipline of kung fu. The real heavies, of course, are the outlandishly insulting “foreign devil” British officials, personified by a snarling Western-style boxer named Twister (stunt man Darren Shahlavi), who challenges seemingly all of China to a fistfight. Producer Wong and director Yip’s return to “old school” HK moviemaking, filmed in Shanghai, is jazzed up by sparkling production values and multitudinous fight scenes (choreographed by Hung), and is reportedly released in the US uncut and undubbed. Screenplay by Edmond Wong. Also starring Lynn Hung and Simon Yam. (108 min.)
