Christopher Nolan’s curiously flat and dull outer space sci-fi spectacle runs about an hour too long. It concerns veteran astronaut Matthew McConaughey’s dangerous mission to scout out Earth-like planets in another galaxy, because our home planet is dying from climate change. On board with the ace pilot are Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, and David Gyasi, plus special effects that don’t seem all that special. Let’s not even talk about the sound problems. Genre movies can fail, but no other genre fails quite as disastrously as bad sci-fi. Quite a letdown for the maker of the Dark Knight films, who cooked up the screenplay with his brother, Jonathan Nolan. It’s not a terrible movie, it’s just such a chore. Also with Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, and John Lithgow (169 min.).
