Interpol, Interpol
Streetdate: September 7 on Matador Records

On their fourth and self-titled full-length album, Interpol returns to Matador, the label that released their first two albums. It's their last album to feature bassist Carlos Dengler, whose departure was announced in May. Mixed by Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers), there's a greater emphasis on the rhythm section, which carries the band through a set of dark, thematically connected songs. Interpol on tour now.

Grinderman, Grinderman 2
Streetdate: September 14 on Anti Records

When Nick Cave put the Bad Seeds on temporary hiatus, he formed Grinderman with Warren Ellis, Jim Sclavunos, and Martyn Casey -- all members of his primary outfit. They were the mirror image of the Bad Seeds: irreverent, hard rocking, and just plain fun. They issued their self-titled debut album, a crunchy, howling slab of grit, grime, sleazy humor, swampy shambolic blues, and high-octane garage band energy. Grinderman 2 is another step in that direction, albeit a bit further afield. All the original trademarks are there: the cacophonous piano, howling guitars and electric mandolins, sawing violins, low-end basslines, and cracking, clamorous beats, rooted in basic roar and roll. The new album was co-produced by Grinderman and Nick Launay (Public Image Ltd, Birthday Party). Grinderman on tour this fall.
