For many people, "pop" implies some pitch-corrected tween idol backed by hired hands playing songs written by a fortysomething. For others, it's hardly a dirty word but conjures bubblegum harmonies, catchy hooks, and sun-shiny lyrics -- at least in the case of David Bash, founder of the eleven-year-running International Pop Overthrow. The worldwide music fest showcases little-known and underappreciated bands, in cities as diverse as Tokyo and Liverpool, who all share the common love of a hook. San Francisco's five-day fest will feature 38 acts, including Foxtail Somersault, Josh Fix, Sean O'Brien and His Dirty Hands, the Barbary Coasters, andCandypill(whose catchy but not exactly upbeat song is "That Asshole Bob"). At the Rockit Room (406 Clement St., San Francisco) from August 12-16. 8 p.m., $8-10.
