Hip-hop trio Injury Reserve have been rocking their hometown of Tempe Arizona for five years with a batch of excellent mixtapes before finally releasing the group’s stellar debut full-length last year. Right there on opening track “Oh Shit!!!” one of the group’s two rappers Ritche With A T lays out exactly what kind of group Injury Reserve is: “This ain’t jazz-rap/this that spazz-rap/this that raised-by-the-internet, ain’t-had-no-dad rap.” The song, along with literally every tune on the record, clashes together beast-mode straight-forward old school flow with the oddest beats that land somewhere between punk rock and psych soundscapes. The group themselves are happy with all the inherent contradictions within their music, noting in a Revolver interview that it “makes people uncomfortable because people can’t put it in a category.” But fret not, it’s a good discomfort that will have you reevaluating the boundaries of hip-hop.
