Mark Ruffalo can virtually do no wrong in his role as the bipolar father of two young girls, who must care for them while his wife/their mother (Zoe Saldana) is away on business – with a multitude of comic obstacles and miscues. Writer-director Maya Forbes’ family comedy wisely steers clear of the obvious maudlin pitfalls of such a scenario, and lets the actors warm up at their own speeds. Young actresses Imogene Wolodarsky (daughter of the filmmaker) and Ashley Aufderheide are particularly good as the girls. How could this get any quirkier? A milestone of extra-strength cuteness (90 min.).
