Infant Mortality Rates Strikingly Higher for Black Newborns

Despite efforts by the federal government to eliminate the racial disparities in infant mortality, black children in California are more than twice as likely to die as newborns than whites, Latinos, or Asians, the Oakland Tribune reported.

Citing figures from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the newspaper said that the rate of infant mortality among black children is 13.6 nationally for every 1,000 births. That compares unfavorably to 5.7 deaths per thousand for white children, 5.5 deaths for Latinos, and 4.5 for children of Asian descent.
