Indoor Seed Starting

When: Thu., Feb. 21, 7 p.m. 2013

Though winter lasts another month, those itching to start a garden don't need to wait until the warmer months roll around. The Bay Area Seed Exchange Library (BASIL) will host a workshop at the Ecology Center (2530 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) to teach you how to grow seedlings indoors using inexpensive materials, without relying on plant nurseries. The class, led by BASIL director Patrick O'Connor, will help attendees get started as self-sufficient gardeners, while offering a supportive network of other local gardeners. Workshop participants will learn about the living seed bank movement --a response to big companies buying up and replacing carefully bred, diverse seed strains (the backbone of sustainable food systems) with their own hybrid, patented varieties. Learn to grow seedlings for crops like tomatoes, peppers, and herbs, in time for summer planting. 7-9 p.m., free. 510-548-2220 ext. 239 or EcologyCenter.org
