Indigenous Spiritual Walk Community Potluck

When: Fri., Feb. 8, 7-9 p.m. 2008

Inspired by a 1978 indigenous spiritual walk from AlcatrazIsland to Washington, DC, the Longest Walk 2 aims to bring attention to environmental issues, as well as the need to protect sacred sites. Participants will start their journey on Monday, Feb. 11, after a 4:30 a.m. sunrise gathering on AlcatrazIsland. Walkers will trek roughly ten miles a day, braving inclement weather and picking up debris along interstate highways. Their caravan will include NipponzanMyohoji Buddhist monks, international drummers, and a mobile kitchen made from a converted school bus. A slew of benefit shows will take place this weekend in the East Bay, including a community potluck at the InterTribal Friendship House (523 International Blvd., Oakland) on Friday, Feb. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday's kickoff concert at the EastSide Cultural Center (2277 International Blvd., Oakland; 6 p.m., $25-$40); and Sunday's Longest Walk Benefit Show at La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley; 6:30 p.m., $15-$25).
